Course Description:
Welcome to Foundations of English II! You have reached your 10th grade year and now it is time to prove what you have learned! I’m very excited to be teaching you this year, and I know we will have an engaging and productive term. Foundations of English II is designed to help you build and reinforce reading, writing, and basic academic skills needed for success in high school and college. You will continue to develop mastery in reading comprehension, vocabulary building, study skills, and media literacy. Additionally, you will build confidence in writing fundamentals by focusing on composition in a variety of formats, grammar, and style. Formative assessments identify areas of weakness, lessons are prescribed to improve performance, and summative assessments track progress and skill development in preparation for Standard English next semester. |

Unit 1 Overview: What A Reader Needs...
In this unit, students will strengthen foundational reading comprehension skills through exposure to texts that vary in genre and complexity. They will practice using the skills they learn by reading more and more complex informational and narrative texts.
Unit 2 Overview: What A Writer Needs…
In this unit, students will read model texts and analyze authors’ style and specificity. Students will practice using the techniques they are studying by creating their own writing and revise when appropriate and necessary. They will explore various genres and tasks to improve their own writing style.
Unit 3 Overview: What A Speaker Needs…
In this unit, students will explore how speech and language shape our culture and create common frames for knowledge building. They will read from a variety of texts, particularly poetry, to identify speech patterns, the importance of word choice and specific diction, and rhetorical style. They will have opportunities to practice speaking in groups and individually. They will be able to adjust their speech for audience, task, and purpose.
Unit 4 Overview: What A Learner Needs…
In this unit, students will explore how people learn, why life-long learning is important, and how they can make choices to improve their learning experiences. They will read a variety of texts that showcase global education issues and common learning problems. They will enter into another culture and compare the experience of the author to their own community. The students will have the opportunity to write various texts and present to their peers.
